Dishwasher Repair

You’re in the right place if your Samsung dishwasher is not draining. This guide will give you step-by-step instructions on finding out why it has stopped draining and how to fix it.

The first four steps are very straightforward and don’t require any expert knowledge of tools to check. However, if they don’t fix the problem, you will need to check other components with a multimeter.

Let’s get started.

Step 1 – Check the Drain Impeller

The drain impeller helps to drain your Samsung dishwasher by pushing water out through the dedicated drain hose. If the impeller stops working, your dishwasher won’t be able to drain.

Follow these instructions to check the drain impeller:

  1. Locate the drain impeller. It can be found at the bottom of your appliance. (Your user manual will have a diagram of your dishwasher components if you don’t know where to find it).
  2. Check the drain impeller for any signs of damage.
  3. If the impeller is damaged, you will need to replace it.
  4. To replace the impeller, you will need to purchase the correct replacement part and then swap it with the old one.
  5. Once installed, turn your dishwasher onto a cycle and check if it can now drain. If it still doesn’t drain, move on to step 2.

Step 2 – Check the Drain Hose

If the drain hose becomes bent or leaks, your dishwasher won’t be able to drain. If the hose is leaking, this will be obvious as you’ll have a big puddle of water on your floor. If this is the case, replace the hose immediately.

Follow these instructions to check the drain hose:

  1. Locate the drain hose. (Your user manual will have a diagram of your dishwasher components if you don’t know where to find it).
  2. Disconnect the hose at both ends. You may need to put a container or towel on the floor to catch any water leaking.
  3. Once removed, inspect it for any damage. If damaged, the hose will need to be replaced.
  4. Next, check for any blockages. This can be done by pouring water down the hose. If you find any blockages, use a piece of wire to remove any debris.
  5. Once the hose has been cleaned, reattach it to the dishwasher. If replacing the hose, attach the new hose.
  6. Turn your dishwasher on to a cycle and check if it can now drain. If not, move on to step 3.

Step 3 – Check the Drain Solenoid

The next step is to check the drain solenoid in your Samsung dishwasher. The drain solenoid opens the drain valve so dirty water can drain out of the appliance. If the drain solenoid doesn’t open, your dishwasher will not be able to drain.

Follow these instructions to check the drain solenoid:

  1. Locate the drain solenoid. (Your user manual will have a diagram of your dishwasher components if you don’t know where to find it).
  2. Once located, inspect the solenoid for any damage. If damaged, replace it. If it isn’t damaged, move on to step 4.
  3. To install a new solenoid, order the correct replacement part and swap it with the old one.
  4. Once installed, turn your dishwasher on to a cycle and check if it can now drain. If not, move on to step 4.

Step 4 – Check the Check Valve

The check valve is there to stop water coming back into the dishwasher when it’s draining. If the check valve becomes defective, your Samsung dishwasher won’t be able to drain.

Follow these instructions to check the check valve:

  1. Locate the check valve (Your user manual will have a diagram of your dishwasher components if you don’t know where to find it).
  2. Inspect the check ball inside the valve to ensure it isn’t stuck. If stuck, you can free it by removing any debris blocking it.
  3. If the ball isn’t stuck, check the check valve to ensure it can open and close. If it’s defective, the check valve will need to be replaced. If working correctly, move on to step 5.
  4. To replace the check valve, order the correct replacement part and install it in your appliance.
  5. Once replaced, check if your Samsung dishwasher can now drain. If it still doesn’t drain, move on to step 5.

Step 5 – Check the Drain Pump

The drain pump is responsible for draining water out of your dishwasher. When it stops working, your dishwasher can’t completely drain or not at all. Checking the drain pump requires you to remove it from your dishwasher and test it with a multimeter.

Follow these instructions to check the drain pump:

  1. Turn the power off.
  2. Locate the drain pump. (Your user manual will have a diagram of your dishwasher components if you don’t know where to find it).
  3. Remove the drain pump from your dishwasher. This can be done by unthreading the screws that hold it in place and disconnecting the wire harnesses.
  4. Test the drain pump motor with a multimeter.
  5. If the pump has continuity, it is working correctly, so you can reattach it to your dishwasher and move on to step 6. If it doesn’t have continuity, the drain pump unit will need to be replaced.
  6. To replace the drain pump, order the correct replacement part and then install it in your appliance.
  7. Once replaced, check if your Samsung dishwasher can now drain. If it still doesn’t drain, move on to step 6.

Step 6 – Check the Drain Valve

The drain valve in your Samsung dishwasher opens and closes to allow water to drain out. Most modern dishwashers have electronic valves that automatically open when your dishwasher needs to drain. However, if the valve becomes defective, your dishwasher won’t be able to drain.

Follow these instructions to check the drain valve:

  1. Turn the power off.
  2. Locate the drain valve. (Your user manual will have a diagram of your dishwasher components if you don’t know where to find it).
  3. Test the drain valve with a multimeter.
  4. If the drain valve has continuity, you will need to call a technician to come and inspect your dishwasher. If it doesn’t have continuity, the drain valve unit will need to be replaced.
  5. To replace the drain valve, order the correct replacement part and then install it in your appliance.
  6. Once replaced, check if your Samsung dishwasher can now drain. If it still doesn’t drain, you will need a technician to inspect your dishwasher.
