Finding standing water at the bottom of your dishwasher after a cycle is a common headache. While Bosch dishwashers are among the most reliable on the market, their high-efficiency drainage systems are sensitive to blockages.
If your unit is displaying the E24 error code or simply leaving a pool of water behind, follow this guide to get it back in working order.
1. Start with a Reset
Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. If the cycle was interrupted, the dishwasher might just need a nudge to finish draining.
- The Fix: Press and hold the Start button for 3–5 seconds to reset the unit. Close the door and listen for the drain pump. If the pump engages but the water doesn’t move, you likely have a physical blockage.
2. Inspect and Clean the Filter
The most frequent culprit for drainage issues is a clogged filter. Over time, food particles, grease, and even small bits of plastic can obstruct the flow.
- How to do it: 1. Remove the bottom rack.2. Twist the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub counter-clockwise and lift it out.3. Rinse the mesh filter under warm water and use a soft brush to remove any residue.4. Important: Reach into the hole where the filter sits and check for any debris (like glass shards or lemon seeds) that might be sitting at the bottom.
3. Unblock the Drain Pump (The “Teaspoon Trick”)
Unlike many other brands, Bosch allows you to access the drain pump impeller from inside the tub.
- How to do it:
- Remove all standing water with a sponge.
- Use a teaspoon to pry off the white plastic pump cover (usually held by a small clip).
- Grip the cover by the lug and pull it up and forward.
- Caution: Wear gloves, as broken glass often ends up here. Check if the impeller (the little fan) can spin freely. Remove any obstructions.
- Snap the cover back on—it must click into place or the dishwasher will not drain properly.
4. Check the Drain Hose and Air Gap
If the pump is clear but water still won’t leave the machine, the problem might be in the plumbing connections.
- The Air Gap: If you have a small chrome cylinder on your sink, unscrew the cap and check for gunk.
- Garbage Disposal: If you recently installed a new disposal, ensure the “knock-out plug” in the dishwasher nipple was removed.
- The High Loop: Ensure your drain hose has a “high loop” (it should be fastened to the underside of your counter before connecting to the drain). This prevents sink water from backflowing into your dishwasher.
Still Having Trouble?
If you’ve cleared the filter and the pump, but your Bosch still won’t drain, you may be dealing with a failing drain pump motor or a control board issue.
