

If you are running clothes through the dryer two, three, even four times and still pulling out damp laundry, the good news is that it is almost never the dryer itself. As long as the drum is turning and the unit is making heat, the problem is usually airflow or a dirty moisture sensor, not a failed dryer. Real service jobs show the same pattern across market after market. A Colorado Springs call on a Whirlpool WED5100HW2 was logged as clothes taking two to three cycles to dry, with the vent obstructed, exhaust temperatures climbing past 200 degrees, and a crushed transition hose behind the unit. A Maytag MED6500MW0 was the same story, heating fine but choked by a vent about a third full of lint.
Because a restricted vent is also a leading cause of house fires, sorting this out protects your home and your wallet. Here is the order a technician actually works through, starting with the checks that cost nothing.
Start here: the free checks
Clean the lint screen the right way. Pull it after every load. If you use dryer sheets, they leave an invisible film that a quick roll-off will not remove, so every month or so wash the screen with warm water and a little dish soap, scrub gently with a soft brush, rinse, and dry it completely before sliding it back in.
Wipe the moisture sensor bars. This is the step most people miss, and it solves the “runs multiple cycles” complaint more often than anything else. Sensor-dry models read two thin metal strips inside the drum, usually just behind the lint trap opening, to decide when clothes are dry. Dryer-sheet residue coats those strips, the dryer thinks the load is already dry, and it shuts the cycle down early. Unplug the dryer, find the two side-by-side metal bars, and wipe them with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol until they are shiny. If you use dryer sheets, make this a monthly habit.
Check how you are loading it. Auto cycles need clothes to tumble freely and brush against those sensor bars. A stuffed drum, a single heavy comforter, or a mixed load of thin and thick items will fool the sensor into stopping early. For bulky or heavy loads, use the extended or extra-heat option, or switch to a timed cycle. And if your dryer has an eco or energy-saving option switched on, know that it deliberately lowers heat and adds drying time.
Then check the airflow path
If the free checks do not fix it, move to the vent. Unplug the dryer first.
The transition hose. This is the visible duct between the dryer and the wall. It should be semi-rigid or rigid metal and no longer than 8 feet. If yours is the flexible foil or plastic accordion type, that is part of your problem. Whirlpool specifically warns against it because it collapses, crushes behind the unit, and traps lint. Look for kinks, crushing, or a hose so long it loops behind the dryer, and replace it with short, metal duct.
The vent run to the exterior. From the wall, the duct should be 4-inch rigid metal running as straight and short as possible to the outside, no more than about 35 feet total, with roughly 5 feet subtracted for every 90-degree turn. Your model’s installation sheet has the exact limit. Over months of use this run packs with lint, especially on the long vertical runs up to a roof stack that are common on Colorado’s flatter roofs. A vent-brush kit and a vacuum will clear the sections you can reach.
The exterior flap. Find where the vent exits the house and confirm the flap swings open freely when the dryer runs. If it is stuck shut with lint or debris, hot, moist air has nowhere to go.
Why airflow matters so much
A dryer removes about a gallon of water from every load, and it needs a clear path to push that hot, humid air outside. When the path is restricted, three things happen. Drying time balloons because the moisture has nowhere to go. Temperatures inside the unit climb well past normal, which is hard on both your clothes and the dryer’s own parts. And lint builds in the duct, where it becomes a genuine fire hazard. Failure to clean dryer venting is the single leading factor in home dryer fires, which is why this is worth doing even when your clothes are drying fine.
There is a hidden cost too. That same trapped heat is often what eventually warps a heating element or blows a thermal fuse. In other words, the cheap problem you ignore is frequently what kills the expensive part later.
When it is not airflow: inside the dryer
If the vent is clear, the sensor is clean, and clothes still come out damp, the problem is deeper, and here the symptom tells you a lot. If the dryer heats but will not dry, you are still looking at airflow, the sensor, or the blower wheel that moves the air. If the dryer makes no heat at all, that points to the heating element, thermal fuse, thermostat, or thermal cutoff. Those heat parts involve electrical testing and usually confirm why the unit overheated in the first place, so they are best left to a technician. Professionals also measure the actual airflow restriction at the vent with instruments, which is how they tell a “borderline” vent from one that is quietly starving your dryer.

You can safely handle the lint screen, the sensor bars, your loading habits, the transition hose, the reachable vent run, and the exterior flap.
